Hunting empanadas

Empanada is a baked or fried stuffed bread or pastry of Latin-American originwhich can have a variety of fillings from savoury to sweet.

This summer during my visit to New York City, my cousins' friends brought us some incredibly delicious empanadas from Mama's Empanadas .This was my very first time trying this snack.
As soon as I came back to DC (the place of my summer dwelling), I managed to find this tasty meal there. When I returned to Kyiv I was curious whether we have such phenomenon as empanadas in our hometown

As the food culture keeps flourishing here, we succeeded in finding at least 4 spots with these marvelous tasty bundles. So if you find yourself in Kyiv, feel free to check them out ;)

We've ranked the places from worst to best and focused on Colombian style empanadas.

4. La Bodeguita Del Medio

These crusty chicken and mushroom empanadas here are of a huge size, but they rather resemble samosa than the batch we were looking for. The approximate price of empanadas in La Bodeguita Del Medio is $5, which is the highest one out of all the places we've been to.

The service here was quite fast, yet it wasn't friendly. Nevertheless, in a week I came back to La Bodeguita with my sis in order to try banana pancakes, the service was way better. Plus, there was live Cuban music!

3. Che Guevara

It seems that in this place empanadas are quite a popular dish, as me and Marichka didn't manage to try them during our first visit. We had to come back here another day.

The approximate price is $3. We ordered Mexican mix and salmon & spinach bundles. These empanadas look like Colombian ones, and they're quite tasty, but, as for me, the dough was a bit dry, so the bundles were falling apart and didn't hold the filling. In general, we were satisfied with the nice atmosphere and agreeable service.

2. Bagle Empanadas

I would rather put Bagle Empanadas on the first place, but unfortunately the company positions itself as street food and doesn't have permanent spot. You can find Bagle Empanadas on various Food festivals and on their Facebook page. Their empanadas have exactly the same taste as those I tried in NYC: they're crispy, hot and with perfect dough recipe! Moreover, they have numerous different tastes: beef, olive & vegetable; chicken, cheese & asparagus, then vegetarian ones and finally caramel apple sweet empanadas. The price is only $2.

I found their stand on Food Festival, so if you see this sign anywhere, you should definitely try their empanadas!

1. La Vaca Tapas

The first thing that you notice when you enter this place is the hip interior of La Vaca.

The service is at its highest level and the waitresses are very attentive to details: for example, they can bring you fancy little candles and, for sure, they do care about your feedback, I don't even need to mention that the service is fast. Empanadas are as good as the Bagle Empanadas and served with guacamole and orange emulsion. They have empanadas with chicken, tuna and spicy chickpea. The price is $2.

We ordered the ones with chicken and tuna and enjoyed them a lot. The dough is crunchy and, what is important, not greasy. I liked the ones with tuna, more than with chicken, though all of them are delicious. I highly recommend this place, as it is a happy medium between the price and taste!

Hope you found this post interesting. More to come soon...
